Masonry Jobs

Masonry jobs create different types of surfaces that vary in complexity from installing a walkway to completing an intricate interior of a building lobby. Repairing and building floors, they utilize either the corner lead or the corner pole for masonry work. Working mostly outdoors, workers must have physical dexterity to be able to work for long hours while bending, stretching, and reaching frequently.

Skills for a masonry job can be learned informally through more experienced workers. Starting out with less complex tasks, as new workers gain skills they can lend their efforts to difficult structures. Apprenticeships for masonry careers teach workers how to properly lay brick and mix mortar among other tasks during a period of two to four years. These programs involve three years of on the job training and a minimum of 144 hours of formal training in the classroom and require that applicants be at least 17 years of age.

In 2006, there were almost 200,000 masons employed with the majority working under specialty trade, building, or general contractors. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a 10 percent increase in masonry employment during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This rate of employment will be about as fast as the national average for all occupations with employment increases due to the need to replace older building and structures for modernization efforts.  Prospective job seekers should expect excellent job opportunities as many positions will become vacant as workers change careers or exit the work force entirely.
